'' Operators are looking to introduce higher bandwidth mobile data services to continue to increase their revenue; GPRS is a packet switched access mode for GSM systems, which will enable more efficient use of the radio resources leading to increased data speeds and capacity. GPRS will allow the introduction of services based on packet switching including video conferencing, Internet access and cash services. GPRS users will be able to constantly connect to their office data networks no matter what the cost or location.

An overview of the history of GSM
Identify the roles of different associations and standards bodies involved with GSM. Understand the evolution of mobile networks both 1st and 2nd generation. Examine the development of GSM. Examine the technologies behind 2.5 Generation GSM
Understand the new technologies behind 2.5G. Examine HSCSD and its capabilities. Examine EDGE and its capabilities. Understand the data capabilities of GSM.
The functionality of GPRS
Understand the main objectives of implementing GPRS. Identify the advantages of using packet switching. Examine the range of services, supported by GPRS. Examine the main user benefits of GPRS.
Explain the development of GPRS Standards and Specifications
Determine the capabilities supported by phase 1 of GPRS. Examine how phase 2 of GPRS will improve its capabilities.
GPRS Network architecture
Describe the new network entities required for GPRS. Examine how the existing GSM network entities needs to be upgraded. Describe how GPRS Roaming will work. Examine how intra and inter PLMNs work together. Describe how billing will work.
GPRS Protocol stack
Describe the components of the protocol stack. Examine how each component works. Understand how encapsulated packets are sent. Examine how each component links to the next component.
GPRS Air interface
Identify the new GPRS channels required. Explain how the new channels work. Understand how to map GPFS logical channels onto physical channels. Explain how they enable session activation. Describe the difference between master PDCHs and slave PDCHs.

Describe the 3 classes of terminal available. Explain how the handset performs a GPRS attach and detach. State the timescale of handset availability.
