The importance of innovation and new product design
Why products fail. A decision process for proactive new product development. Cost, time, risk and expected benefit in product development.
Sources of innovative ideas and methods for enhancing creativity and generating ideas.
Researching market potential and selecting target markets.
Environmental analysis (competitive, economic, consumer and governmental issues).
Developing the core benefit proposition (CBP)
Developing the marketing mix consistently with the CBP in order to fulfill it
Enhancing product quality through quality function deployment.
Product launch (pretest and test marketing)
Managing the product through its life cycle
A look ahead at New Product Design (NPD) in the 21st century: Systems for intelligent automation of NPD

The programme has a managerial focus although it demonstrates the usefulness of mathematical models and decision support technologies in decision making. The programme is designed to achieve these objectives without excessive dependence on mathematics and class time will be spent on conceptual understanding, applications and usage. The knowledge gained in the programme is applicable primarily to consumer packaged goods.

This programme uses a variety of pedagogical and training tools. Specifically, a combination of lectures, readings, analytical tools, simulations and problem assignments, will serve to reinforce the key concepts. In addition, participants will work through a systematic process which will enable them to develop a conceptual framework for new product design which can be embedded within their own company.
