Course Description:

'' The programme has four main strands:

the evolution and current state of the UK banking industry
current developments in retail and corporate banking
strategic and organisational issues now facing financial institutions
the political and regulatory environment in which banks now operate

The programme identifies the main reasons for the intensification of competition in banking and finance including the breaking down of demarcation lines and the reduction of industry entry barriers caused by financial liberalisation and technological advances.

It considers how these change factors have impacted on the structure and financial performance of the industry. The impact of political and regulatory changes is also analysed, as are the main changes that have occurred in the services that banks provide to their retail and wholesale customers.

The programme concludes by considering possible strategic responses to these change factors. The focus is both external, on the choice of appropriate product and market segments and competition strategies, and internal, on the resource and organisational issues now facing banks.
