Course Description:

'' Helping delegates to understand the main principles involved in developing a distribution strategy and the impact that this has on the options for both procuring and managing the service. The tutors will discuss key issues to consider when specifying distribution services as well as the ¡°dos and don¡¯ts¡± of putting a distribution contract into place.

Aims
Highlights at a Glance

• How to develop an effective distribution strategy
• Understand the key cost drivers for the industry
• How to produce a successful specification and ITT
• Explore typical pitfalls and how to avoid them

For most organisations involved in manufacturing and trading physical goods distribution services represent an important component in the supply chain. Interestingly, distribution is also seen as a ¡°necessary evil¡± in the supply chain ¨C something which adds cost rather than value but which if executed badly has great potential to cause disruption to the supply chain and severely jeopardise the success of the business.

For the buyer the problem is compounded by the fact that over the last twenty years distribution has become more divers and, in many areas, much more sophisticated. At one extreme it is still possible to spot-hire a lorry and driver to supplement an in-house transport service. At the other extreme there are third-party logistics suppliers offering a range of highly specialised outsourced services ¨C sometimes on a global basis. The choice of service usually leads on to a further bewildering array of contract options. Then there is the question of measuring performance and trying to determine whether the provider (in-house or outsourced) is providing value for money.
