Training Course:Critical Thinking for Better Decision MakingSchool/Trainer:University of Canberra Canberra, ACT, Australia
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' This course is designed for people who have decision-making responsibility in their workplace such as middle and senior managers, and professionals, in the public or private sector.
COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Decision making is the substance of most professional careers. Yet it is easier to point to examples of poor decisions than it is to find examples of good ones. A major factor behind this is that the critical thinking skills central to effective decision making so often assumed to be possessed by professionals actually have to be acquired - either through experience, or through education. On-the-job experiences that have adverse outcomes can be very costly. This course will answer the questions: what is critical thinking and why is it so important? What is cognitive bias and how does it interfere with decision making? How can I become a clearer thinker and a better decision maker?
COURSE CONTENT This one-day course explains the impact of critical thinking (positive; conscious) and cognitive bias (negative; sub-conscious) on decision making. Topics include:
why critical thinking is important; the nature of thinking, reasoning and argument; critical thinking strategies and skills; how to identify faulty reasoning; metacognition ¨C evaluating our own decisions; rational decision making and the concept of bounded rationality; critical thinking as creative problem solving; and cognitive bias: what it is, how it works, and how to limit its impact. METHOD OF DELIVERY The course is designed as an interactive seminar. Through the day, short blocks of theoretical background and skills identification for the various sub-topics will be introduced by the presenter. These concept-building introductions will be followed by case study and other examples for group analysis. If appropriate, participants will be encouraged to draw on their own experiences to inform the discussion. Take-home materials for individual analysis and reflection will enable participants to identify and work on their own critical thinking strengths and weaknesses to improve decision effectiveness.
