'' This course is designed for non-economists in both the public and private sectors who need to understand the main concepts, terms and jargon used in economic publications and presentations. This course does not assume any prior knowledge of economics.
COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES All organisations must make transactions in many different markets. This course starts with an explanation of how markets work, looking at both markets which are competitive as well as markets where competition is limited. This section will show how organisations can optimise their performance as they engage in these transactions.
This course will explain the role of the public sector in intervening to improve outcomes when markets perform poorly or fail. Markets fail for many reasons including that of fairness. The course will pay particular attention to market failure and the response of public policy.
This course will also demonstrate how organisations are affected by the general, or macroeconomic, performance of the economy. Fiscal and monetary policies are the general public policy responses to poor macroeconomic performance.
Finally, the course will show how all organisations are affected by globalisation and the international economy.
COURSE CONTENT This course has a duration of two days. The main concepts discussed are:
The performance of markets Competition Market failure Regulation and Deregulation The Quarterly National Accounts and particularly: economic growth the capital market the current account balance Fiscal and Monetary policies Trade and capital flows between Australia and the rest of the world METHOD OF DELIVERY The course will be conducted in an interactive seminar style. An extensive manual will be provided. The presenter will deliver information on each topic but will welcome discussion and debate on issues and concepts. Participants with particular queries are invited to bring those along to form part of the discussion.
