'' This course is tailored to meet the needs of analysts wishing to understand information contained in general purpose financial reports (GPFR) and business plans. Typically, these people will be concerned with gaining insights into the viability of a specific organisation, before they invest in it.
COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Analysts are particularly interested in answers to the following questions:
¡®Is the entity likely to survive in the short term?¡¯ and ¡®What are the longer-term prospects for the entity?¡¯ The objective of this course is to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to answer these questions for their organisation. One of the aims of this course is to highlight to participants a number of the traps that lie in wait for analysts when analysing financial reports and business plans. In addition, the course aims to assist participants develop a suite of techniques that provide insights into the health of an entity. These techniques are particularly necessary for general-purpose financial reports, due to the potential for accounting games to distort the image of an entity¡¯s profit and financial position.
COURSE CONTENT The topics of this two-day course will include:
Techniques to analyse an entity¡¯s balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows (or its projected cash flow budget) and how relationships within and between these documents can assist analysts How to evaluate the impact of information contained in the notes to the general purpose financial reports (GPFR) How behavioural factors can adversely affect the quality of decisions made by analysts Examination of the assumptions inherent in the preparation of financial reports and business plans METHOD OF DELIVERY This course will be delivered through an interactive style focusing on ¡®learning by doing¡¯. New concepts will be introduced through a series of short talks. Participants will then be presented with a number of opportunities to apply these techniques to exercises and case studies supplied to them. Case studies will be based on the financial reports of Australian companies and business plans developed by the presenter.
Participants should bring calculators with them to help with calculations.
