'' An introduction to the practice of freestyle Chinese brush painting originally developed by scholars and monks in the 14th century in southern China. Each session starts with a short period of meditation. Basic materials included.

What is the course about?
In Chinese Brush painting the artist works with four objects. These are the brush, the paper, the ink and the colour. The brush painting we will learn is traditionally known as ’freestyle’, developed in the 14th Century by monks and scholars. We will use as our subjects- flowers, plants and the human figure.

What level is the course?
This course is suitable for the most experienced artist as well as the complete beginner.

What will the course cover? (contents,themes,projects)
There will be a short introduction where various exercises and experimentation can take place.
Each class will begin with a short meditation exercise to enable concentration and relaxation. This will follow with calligraphy exercises directly with the brush and ink to paper. We will follow the traditional teaching steps for ’Freestyle Chinese Brush painting’, as taught in China.
As tradition states, our subjects will include flowers, plants and the human form.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate how to use a brush and ink in the traditional Chinese Brush Painting (freestyle).
Demonstrate a personal understanding of how Chinese Brush Painting can begin to support your own artistic development and direction.
Demonstrate an ability of self- appraisal.
Demonstrate an ability to use the brush stroke with confidence and learn to select which elements are essential to the process.
