'' This is a practical photography course based within a broad documentary tradition. Backed by discussion and theory, it takes in classic black and white through to autobiography and recent challenges to the idea of truth.

What is the course about?
This is a practical photography course, based in theory and discussion. Practical sessions will arise from discussion about the nature of and ways to approach documenting the world around us. Students will work on short and longer projects to prouduce an exciting portfolio of colour and black and white work. Technical and practical tips will be given.

What level is the course?
This course is best suited for students who have already done a beginners course for 35mm SLR manual photography, either film or digital.

What will the course cover? (contents,themes,projects)
What is documentary photography? Using your 35mm SLR camera to achieve thoughtful and coherent series of documentary images (it is also possible to do the course using a medium format camera); working on several practical projects; objective-subjective approaches; black and white and colour; from traditional b&w doucumentary photography through colour to challenges to assertions of ’truth’ made by contemporary art photography;looking at significant and relevant photographers; making a portfolio and how to use your work (selling, exhibiting, funding , going on to further study etc)

What can I expect to achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to:
To take better images with strong and effective visual qualities
To produce several thoughtful themed projects that can work as a portfolio
To understand better what documentary photography is, relating it to historical and contemporary approaches that challenge and shift the medium.
To open up new possibilities for ways to approach taking documentary pictures
