'' Learn the basics of woodcarving. A versatile hardwood and other timber will be available for purchase from between £8 - £20 for an initial project.

What is the course about? The course aims to develop an understanding of sculpture as a three dimensional means of expression through the medium of woodcarving.

What level is the course? The course is for all levels; for those who have no previous knowledge or experience of woodcarving and for those who have carved in wood (or stone) previously.

What will the course cover? (contents,themes,projects) There will be discussion with illustrations on aspects of carved sculpture to give focus for designing sculptures for the terms work. Students are encouraged to make clay or plasticine models (maquettes) of intended sculptures in order to visualise the designs three dimensionally before embarking on their wood. Advice will be given on scaling up their designs on to the carving material. There will also be guidance on the use and care of carving tools throughout the course.

What can I expect to achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to: - Understanding of three dimensional form - Appreciation of carved sculpture through photographs - Competence in handling carving tools - A piece of carved sculpture - Appreciate the properties of limewood carving - Learn the safe use of tools, their care and sharpening - Gain some understanding of design suitable for the realisation of a piece of sculpture through the means of woodcarving - Gain confidence and familiarity in working with fundamental elements in carving, that is, form and mass - Appreciate the work of other woodcarvers.
