'' Learn Latin at a rapid pace on this intensive course for beginners. There is an opportunity to take an exam at the end of module 3 and, if successful, you will be awarded the City Lit Foundation Certificate in Latin. Based on Reading Latin, 2 volumes, (CUP).

What is the course about?
This is an intensive course for absolute beginners. Vocabulary and grammatical knowledge is built up partly
through memorising and partly through reading Latin literature, particularly comic plays by Plautus. Students
are encouraged but not obliged to take an exam at the end of module 3 of the course.

What level is the course?
Genuine beginners, not rusty Latinists. Students should be ready to participate in group learning and willing to
discuss both English and Latin grammar. Time for homework is essential as is regular attendance.

Reading, translation and enactment of Plautus’ plays.
Study of grammar.
Practice of vocabulary and grammar learnt through writing or speaking Latin.

command a basic Latin vocabulary
understand how Latin word endings work and apply that knowledge to reading
be more aware of how your own native language works
read Latin inscriptions, letters, comic dialogues and some poems

have insight into Roman life, culture and politics
