'' Starting with important basic first aid skills, such as resuscitation and dealing with unconscious casualties, we will progress to learning to deal with a whole range of injuries. Leads to practical examination. Award: St John Ambulance Certificate of Competence - Lifesaver & Lifesaver Plus. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the course about? The aim of the course is for the students to recognise and deal with a number of First Aid incidents (described below) starting with basic Lifesaving skills and then moving on to learn how to deal with a number of other medical conditions. The course involves two exams - one for the Lifesaver and one for the Lifesaver Plus elements of the course. The award for successful completion is the Lifesaver Certificate, and Lifesaver Plus Certificate (valid for 3 years) which equates with the current Public First Aid Certificate.

What level is the course? - The course starts with basic Lifesaver skills, and builds upon these skills to cover treatment of other medical conditions. - No previous First Aid knowledge is required to attend the course. - Important: Regular attendance is required to achieve the certificate.

What will the course cover? (contents,themes,projects) The course covers what is expected of a First Aider: 1. How to recognise, understand and manage an incident. 2. How to distinguish between incident and casualty management. 3. How to recognise life-threatening conditions and implement the appropriate treatment for the following: casualties who are unconscious, not breathing, have no circulation, are in shock, bleeding, and have minor injuries. 4. Dealing with adult casualties who have airway/breathing/circulation problems caused by choking, suffocating, being strangled, or drowning, 5. Treatment for adults who have inhaled fumes, smoke or gas, 6. Dealing with someone who is suffering an asthma attack, 7. How to deal with a casualty who is hyperventilating, bleeding internally or suffering from Anaphylactic shock.

What can I expect to achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to: - Identify life threatening conditions. - Recognise the role of the First Aider. - Describe an Action Plan for managing an incident. - Perform initial assessment. - Manage an unconscious casualty. - Perform CPR. - Perform artificial ventilation. - Recognise what to do when artificial ventilation does not work. - Identify when a casualty has been poisoned, burned or scalded. - Demonstrate how to deal with a casualty who is choking, fainting, suffering a heart attack or has injuries to muscles or skeleton. - Recognise Hypoglycaemia. - Describe how to deal with epilepsy, suffocation, drowning and inhaled fumes.
