Course Description:
'' Theory and applications of accounting for business combinations, branches and segments, partnerships, and foreign currency transactions and translations. Prerequisite: ACT 3392.
This course covers several topics in advanced accounting. This course will cover accounting for business combinations and accounting for partnerships. Business combinations is America¡¯s most popular business activity. This will include consolidated statements at date of acquisition and subsequent to acquisition, intercompany transactions of merchandise, plant assets, notes receivable and payable, bonds and leases. Accounting for partnerships will include partnership characteristics, formation, accounting for activities, ownership changes, and liquidations. Advanced accounting, combined with your intermediate accounting is the main topics tested at the Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) part of the CPA exam.
CLASS MEETINGS: This class is an internet class with optional meeting every Wednesday from 10:40- 11:50 A.M. The meeting will be devoted to answering your questions concerning lecture outline and working problems. You are not required to attend those meetings
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
List and describe the major economic and accounting issues raised by business combinations.
Explain how consolidated statement working papers and the resultant financial statements are prepared, and calculate consolidated net income incrementally and residually under various economic and organizational conditions.
List and describe the accounting principles and current professional guidance governing the preparation of interim financial statements and segment disclosures.
Explain the fundamentals of accounting for both foreign-currency transactions and the translation of foreign entities¡¯ financial statements into useful source material.
Explain the accounting procedures for corporations in financial difficulty.
