Course Description:

'' This hike, led by Dr. Martha Yates, passes through some of the most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta is a major geological basalt formation just north of San Juan Pueblo in northern New Mexico, which overlooks the Rio Grande. Along the eastern slope is the petroglyph site, on private land, containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs carved into its massive basalt boulders. The site is famous for its shield figures, an abundant number of flute-playing animals, and historic Spanish images.
Departure time is 10:00 am from the Phillips 66 gas station in the Ohkay Casino complex about 2 miles north of Espanola on State Road 68. It is on the right as you drive north towards Taos. Bring binoculars, lunch, water (2 quarts per person), and sunscreen; wear sturdy hiking boots, hat, and adequate clothing for protection against the sun and the cholla. The trail is no more than a mile but steep in places.
