'' The gerontological nurse practitioner program prepares a student for a role as an advanced practice nurse in primary care of the elderly. The focus of the clinical sequence is on the elderly client and his/her response to healthcare needs. Advanced nursing practice is approached from an interdisciplinary perspective in multiple settings; including primary care, long term care and specialty services. Advanced assessment and diagnostic reasoning are taught as the basis of nursing management. Emphasis is placed on the development of clinical judgment in health promotion as well as in the nursing management of acute and chronic health problems in the elderly. Clinical practicum is implemented in collaborative practice of geriatric nurse practitioners, geriatricians, and geriatric fellows. Graduates are eligible to take the ANCC certification examination for the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner.
