'' Accountants and auditors hold nearly one million jobs in the United States and the field is expected to grow. The increasing role into financial management and consulting is anticipated to spur job growth. In addition, the need to replace accountants and auditors who retire or transfer to other occupations will produce numerous job openings annually in this large occupation.
UM-Flints accounting program emphasizes developing an understanding of the social, ethical, economic, legal, and regulatory environments that affect accounting. Development of problem solving, decision-making, communication, and leadership skills, in addition to business and accounting knowledge are emphasized.
The accounting program at UM-Flint prepares students for a flexible career. Most become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), which allows them great mobility in the field. Many graduates work in the public sector performing a broad range of accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting activities for their clients, who may be corporations, nonprofit organizations, or individuals. Managerial accountants, also called industrial or corporate accountants, record and analyze the financial information of the companies for which they work. Government accountants maintain and examine the records of government agencies and audit private businesses and individuals.
