Course Description:

'' The Master of Science in Nursing, featuring a part-time curriculum with selected courses provided online, prepares advanced practice nurses to deliver high quality, cost-effective health care that meets the needs of society. The three-year, part-time program consists of three tracks: the Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) track, the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track, and the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) track.

The ANP track prepares advanced practice nurses who are providers of direct health care services such as disease prevention, health promotion, and management of patients with acute and chronic multi-system health problems. Most ANPs practice in primary care settings and work with a variety of health professionals to promote restoration of health and safe optimal functioning of adolescents and adults. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the Adult Nurse Practitioner certification examination.

The FNP track prepares advanced practice nurses who provide nursing and selected medical services to individuals, families and groups, emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention across the life span. They manage acute and chronic illnesses and treat minor injuries. Credentialed to practice independently, they value and seek ongoing consultative relationships with the interdisciplinary health care team. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the Family Nurse Practitioner national certification examination.

The PMHNP track is unique and on the cutting edge of mental health care. PMHNPs are capable of medical, pharmacological and psychotherapeutic intervention in acute, crisis and chronic situations, as well as being skilled in disease prevention and health maintenance planning. Credentialed to practice independently, they value and seek ongoing consultative relationships with the interdisciplinary health care team. One of the advantages and unique features of the PMHNP program at the University of Michigan-Flint is that graduates will be qualified to sit for both the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam as well as the prestigious Clinical Nurse Specialist In Psychiatric Nursing Certification Exam.
