English students can choose the general program, specialize in writing or technical writing, or work toward a teaching certificate.

General Program in English
The General Program is designed for students seeking a well-rounded education in literature and writing. This broad program includes courses in:

Seminar
In addition to course work, students will complete an Individual Major Portfolio.

Program in English with a Specialization in Writing

Program in English with a Specialization in Technical Writing
The Program in English with a Specialization in Writing is designed for students who want to focus more of their credits in technical writing, communication and linguistics. Technical writers put complex information into easily understandable language. They prepare scientific and technical reports, manuals, catalogs, parts lists, assembly instructions, sales promotion materials, and project proposals. They also plan and edit technical reports and oversee preparation of illustrations, photographs, diagrams, and charts. In addition to course work, students will complete an Individual Major Portfolio.

Teacher’s Certificate Program
If you enjoy grammar and literature and working with youth, you may be interested in a career teaching English to students in grades 7-12. As you pursue a teacher’s certificate, you will receive broad training in English and learn the techniques and theories taught in education courses. Employment after graduation is influenced by academic achievement combined with successful completion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification. This test, designed by the State of Michigan, ensures that certified teachers have the necessary basic skills and content knowledge to perform effectively in Michigan schools. Students interested in teaching outside of Michigan must research the requirements of the state in question.
