The Program in Spanish and International Studies at UM-Flint concentrates on mastering the language, understanding the literature and culture, and knowledge of the linguistic processes that make up a native speaker’s competence. Students of this degree study several disciplines including Spanish, history, political science, and anthropology, which permits them to explore the international scope of these disciplines.

Teacher’s Certificate Program
The Teacher’s Certificate Program in Spanish provides students a sequence of courses that leads to familiarity with Spanish and the experience associated with it. The program requires courses in Spanish, methods of teaching, and student teaching in the language field. As you pursue a teacher’s certificate, you will receive broad training in Spanish and learn the techniques and theories taught in education courses. Employment after graduation is influenced by academic achievement combined with successful completion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification. This test, designed by the State of Michigan, ensures that certified teachers have the necessary basic skills and content knowledge to perform effectively in Michigan schools. Students interested in teaching outside of Michigan must research the requirements of the state in question. Students who major in this program often focus on a second teaching field such as mathematics, science, or social studies. This helps graduates when searching for employment and when looking to teach in a bilingual school.
