Training Course:

English as Second Language

School/Trainer:

Xincon Technology School
New York City, NY, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' Each level of Xincon’s ESL program is designed to improve a student’s English speaking skills while meeting certain grammatical, reading, writing, and listening requirements to prepare him or her for the next level. Generally, students stay in a level for 8 weeks, after which they are given a Final Exam and moved up to the next level. Students are treated on an individual basis and, of course, there are exceptions for students who need to spend more or less time in any given level.

Level 1

Basic: The first level is designed for students who have experience with English grammar and vocabulary from studying in their home countries, but who have a low level of speaking ability. This class focuses primarily on listening comprehension and extensive practice of saying good, complete sentences. This class is centered on teacher directed conversation with constant, obsessive correcting of everything that comes out of a student’s mouth. Topics to be covered include: pronunciation, common American-English expressions, comparative and superlative forms, describing past events and personal history, the 1st conditional, and proper use of possessive pronouns.

Level 2

Pre-Intermediate: The second level takes the basics of speech that were developed in level one and expands them, increasing fluency and accuracy. Students in Level 2 have to talk a lot. Conversation is topical and students are expected to speak at length about various issues. Level 2 is also the time when students begin to use more advanced sentence structures. Topics to be covered include: All past and perfect tenses, improved pronunciation, the imaginary 2nd conditional, various ways of discussing the future, question tags, the world of work: job interviews and resumes, and the passive voice.

Level 3

Intermediate: By the time students finish the third level they will have mastered basically everything about English Grammar (including the future perfect tense, as seen here). In order to really speak English fluently and correctly in the higher levels and in their future lives, students must understand the language on an intellectual level. For this reason, Level 3 focuses more on writing than the other levels. Like all levels, the class is centered on conversation and discussion of the material, but in this level, students will also be made to write perfect sentences and paragraphs, to prove their understanding. Topics to be covered include: reported speech, phrasal verbs and practical expressions, hopes, regrets and the 3rd Conditional, and telephone conversation.

Level 4

Upper Intermediate: Level four is all about topical conversation, expanding vocabulary, and increasing the student’s listening ability to catch all the details and meaning from natural English speech. The course utilizes the Consider the Issues book series, which includes long-format, real radio interviews from National Public Radio. A portion of this class is devoted to listening to these interviews, discussing the details, and using new vocabulary related to the issues. In addition, students expand their knowledge of phrasal verbs, idioms, expressions, and American culture…What Americans talk about and how we talk about it.

Level 5

Advanced: The Advanced class is designed for students who have passed through all the lower levels, as well as students with a lot of English experience from living in English speaking countries and working in English businesses. The objective of this level is to increase comprehension of spoken English to 100%, and clean-up the student’s speech to minimize errors. The class is based on topical conversation and uses primary sources like magazine articles, TV clips, and internet sources to expand vocabulary and spark conversation. The objective of this course is to increase fluency, while simultaneously weeding out bad habits and poor pronunciation that a student may have acquired along the way.

Level 6

Proficiency: The goal of our most advanced class is to increase the diversity and fluency with which students use the English language. A common symptom of very advanced students is that, while they understand almost everything that is said to them, they rely on a very limited set of expressions, verbs, and adjectives to express themselves simply and safely. Using mostly primary sources from magazines, radio, and film, our Proficiency course is an adventurous endeavor towards using the right kinds of words for the right topics. In addition, the course includes a lot of speaking games, discussions, and debates in which students must express themselves thoroughly, increasing fluency and putting an end to the last of their bad habits. It is our hope that through the work done in this last level, our studentsEnglish will become not only proficient, but eloquent.
