'' The objective of the Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology (AASST) degree program is to provide students with the appropriate general education, theory and hands-on skills to begin or enhance a career in surgical technology.
The program is designed to prepare competent, entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains and to help satisfy the need for surgical technologists in local and regional communities.
The AASST program also includes hands-on experience through clinical rotations in operating rooms at local areas hospitals. Students can receive over 500 hours of clinical experience.
What skills can I learn? Students who successfully complete the AASST degree program should be able to: Practice as an entry-level surgical technologist. Provide high quality patient care pre- and post-surgery. Participate as a competent team member, working with surgeons, anesthesiologists, operating room nurses and other surgical personnel. Develop competency as a scrub, circulating, and second assist surgical technologist. Demonstrate expertise in maintaining a sterile field and ensuring aseptic technique throughout the surgical procedure. Engage in employment in operating, delivery, and emergency rooms at hospitals, medical offices, and clinics. Exhibit caring and ethical behavior. Communicate effectively and in a professional manner. Utilize critical thinking skills. Express enthusiasm and a sense of pride in team work. Demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical knowledge and a surgical conscience. Practice the role of patient advocate.
What are some possible career opportunities? According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the need for surgical technologists is expected to increase by 38 percent by the year 2008. Employment opportunities in this field include inpatient or outpatient hospital operating rooms, surgical centers, labor and delivery departments, dental offices, private physicians�offices, central supply unites, and dialysis centers. Some graduates may find employment opportunities as medical equipment sales representatives.
