'' Steep snow-capped mountains, glaciers, transparent salmon streams, untouched forests and alpine meadows, brown bears, mountain goats and eagles... all are Sheldon Jacksons neighboring research laboratories and subjects.
For the Environmental Science major, this unique setting equates to an abundance of hands-on opportunity. Many SJC research labs are provided by nature, while students scuba dive, sea kayak or mountaineer.
SJC is home to the only U.S. college-owned salmon hatchery and the virtually infinite unpolluted Pacific Ocean and pristine old forest wilderness of the Tongass National Forest. The interiors and many coastlines of Baranof Island (our home) and neighboring islands are mostly unexplored and are ripe for major scientific discoveries.
Students participate in hands-on field and laboratory settings year- round by assisting with faculty research projects in the following areas: plant and animal community ecology inter-tidal ecology marine plankton freshwater and marine fish invertebrate ecology Work in the Colleges commercial-scale salmon hatchery and aquarium Participate in various course-related labs that take students into a variety of field settings, including rocky sea shores, island packed bays, deep fjords, and alpine lakes Participate in internship opportunities that often lead to summer positions, on-the-job training and often full-time employment offers Interact with environmental science professionals who visit classrooms as guest speakers How can I use my Enviornmental Science Degree?
The SJC Environmental Science program prepares students for careers in fisheries, aquaculture, ecology, forestry, management of wildlife and natural resources-- as well as graduate studies. Graduates are employed in a variety of positions:
