Course Description:
'' ESL classes are divided into three levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. Placement is determined by your scores on the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency and Aural Comprehension, or your TOEFL score and a personal interview.
Beginning Level
All beginning level students receive twenty-four (24) hours of classroom instruction per week. Classes include reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, conversation, and an overview of American culture. By the end of this level, students understand basic English grammar, write legibly, possess the vocabulary necessary to function in everyday situations, and read and write basic sentences.
Intermediate Level
Intermediate level students also receive twenty-four (24) hours of classroom instruction per week. Classes in reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, idioms, culture and conversation help students develop more complex skills. When the intermediate level is completed, students understand classroom lectures, read and summarize university-level material, write essays, and develop ideas using certain writing techniques and sentence structures.
Advanced Level
Advanced students (500 level TOEFL) receive twelve to fifteen (12-15) hours of instruction per week. Following the advanced level, students speak and write English correctly, read university-level textbooks, perform library research, take notes and write term papers. Besides receiving academic credit for advanced work, students may also take eight (*) units of regular university classes. Students can choose from classes in mathematics, computer science, chemistry, religion, art, physical education and many others.
