'' Legal Nurse Consulting is an emerging field providing opportunities for licensed registered nurses to combine their clinical experience with specialized medical and legal knowledge that will allow them to serve as liaisons between the legal and the health care setting.

The Legal Nurse Consultant Certificate Program at UCR Extension, established in cooperation with the UC Davis School of Law, is an American Bar Association-approved program, which offers a quality, rigorous and challenging legal education to qualified registered nurses. Students are cautioned regarding restrictions against the unauthorized practice of law by non-lawyers.

Employment involves a variety of opportunities, including law firms specializing in personal injury, medical malpractice, toxic torts, product liability and workers compensation; insurance companies; hospitals and other health care providers; government agencies; risk management organizations; and as independent consultants.

Program Goals and Objectives
The program is intended to educate and train registered nurses to evaluate, analyze and render informed opinions on the delivery of health care and related medical/legal issues. Students are cautioned regarding restrictions against the unauthorized practice of law by laypersons. Instruction combines practical skills with legal theory and analysis and is designed to meet the following objectives:

Understand the structure of state and federal court systems
Analyze reported legal opinions
Research legal problems using primary and secondary resources
Understand the process of a civil lawsuit and assist in
discovery and trial preparation
Interview clients and witnesses
Analyze medical records and related information for use in legal matters
Gain an understanding of the health care industry, the insurance industry and related government regulation
Learn the substantive law and procedural practices relating to medical/legal issues in various areas, including personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice and toxic torts
Understand the role of a legal nurse consultant as an expert witness
Write clear, effective memoranda, reports, letters and court documents
Promote the appreciation of and adherence to ethical rules and standards of practice as a legal nurse consultant
