Course Description:

'' An IDEAL student who completes the 15 credits of coursework will earn a Certificate in Criminal Justice. The CCJ is a specific set of courses for students wanting to learn about the dynamics of America’s criminal and juvenile justice systems. CCJ students select courses to gain a broad understanding of the philosophy, theories, and operation of the adult and juvenile justice systems. The CCJ studies will focus on the causes of crime and delinquency, examine fundamental concepts underlying the practice of justice, and analyze the impact of crime on society. Students are challenged to consider new ways of preventing and handling crime.

Certificate Courses (15 credits):

SOC 270 - Sociology of Deviance (3 credits)
This course applies the sociological imagination to explore deviant behavior (rule breaking). Students will be introduced to different definitions of deviance as well as the various theories postulated to explain the causation of deviance. The major assumptions, concepts and propositions of each theoretical perspective will be noted. Students will conduct research at a community based learning site and complete a research ethnography.

SOC 311 Juvenile Delinquency (3 credits)
This course is designed to introduce the student to historical, theoretical, sociological and criminal aspects of juvenile delinquency. It will cover topic areas such as history, theory, sociology and juvenile criminal law, and various aspects of the juvenile justice system. All of the areas will be viewed from sociological and legal perspectives. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding societal responses to juvenile delinquency, the development of the juvenile justice system, and recent reforms of the system in Connecticut and across the United States.

SOC 315 - Criminology (3 credits)
A critical examination of the conditions under which crime and delinquency occur. Theories of crime and punishment. Treatment of offenders.

PSCI 233 - Introduction to U.S. Legal System (3 credits)
This course will offer a comprehensive overview of the U.S. legal system, including an overview of legal practice sources and techniques with emphasis on the major substantive areas of the law. Students will begin by examining issues in constitutional law, with an overview of how government functions and how laws are made. A legal writing segment of the course will allow students to use legal analysis while refining their writing skills.

HUSV 315 Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency
This course concentrates on assessment and diagnosis of substance abuse and chemical dependency as well as the different treatment modalities and methods used to help the addicted. Included in the course will be a look at the different addictions and compulsive behavior patterns including alcohol and other drug dependency, gambling, and eating disorders.

SOC 316 White Collar Crime
The study of crime occurring in the context of complex relationships among boards of directors, executives, managers, and with parent corporate entities, divisions and subsidiaries. The course examines violations of law committed by persons or groups in the course of an otherwise legitimate occupational or financial activity. History and types of white collar crimes are reviewed and the societal responses through legislation, regulatory and enforcement activities.

PSCI 299 The Sociology of Violence
This course will explore key social factors that lead individuals, communities and nation states to view violence as an acceptable and even necessary vehicle to change society or to improve their living circumstances. This course will employ a case study method in its attempt to identify the aforementioned factors. It relies significantly on original sources and it will consider several common perceived causes for violence: inexorable racial oppression, victimization, institutional violence, class oppression, and violence perpetrated in the name of religion. One objective of the course will be to encourage reflection on possible paradigms that might serve to avoid outbreaks of violence in a world where weapons have an exponentially developing capacity to perpetrate destruction and undermine the human condition.

SOC 299 Domestic Violence
The course will provide a systemic perspective on domestic violence. Included in the course will be a review of theories and research on domestic violence; the types of domestic abuse, the legal system’s response; assessment and intervention techniques and community support services for victims; batterer intervention programs; and domestic violence’s effects on children.
