Training Course:

English as a Second Language

School/Trainer:

University of Connecticut - Stamford
Stamford, Connecticut, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' The American Language Program focuses on teaching language proficiency. Accuracy is imperative in order to achieve clear communication. Therefore, most of our courses are based on an understanding of the grammatical structures of English.

Please note that the ESL summer session runs for only 7 weeks, which is half of a full semester.

Core: The Core courses integrate the four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with a focus on grammatical structures.

Reading/Writing (R/W): These high level Reading/Writing courses are for students who wish to develop confidence in their reading and writing skills for professional or academic purposes. Students learn reading strategies such as predicting, inferring, analyzing and synthesizing. The writing portion of the class emphasizes vocabulary, grammar, content and organization.

TOEFL Preparation (TOEFL Prep): The TOEFL Preparation class is for students who wish to strengthen their test taking skills and improve their performance on the new iBT (Internet-based Testing) version of the Next Generation TOEFL examination. In the summer session, we offer a course for combined mid and high advanced level students. Students have the opportunity for a great deal of practice and are given exercises which cover all aspects of the exam. Problems are addressed as they occur.

Grammar/Oral Communication (Gram/OC): These classes give students a solid grammar foundation in writing and speaking. Oral activities encourage students to improve their communication skills while reinforcing the grammatical structures that they have learned in class.

Vocabulary/Idioms Through the Media (V/Idms-Media): This advanced level course will increase the students’ vocabulary and understanding of idiomatic language. Articles from magazines, newspapers, and the internet will be used as well as television and/or movie clips.
