Course Description:
'' The certificate program educates and trains students to identify major environmental health issues facing public health professionals today. Courses explore the sources of environmental agents, their distribution in community and work environments, transfer routes to humans andpossible health effects; the basic biological mechanisms underlying the association between prior exposure and subsequent development of adverse health effects; and control strategies and interventions.
Intended Audience The program is intended for public health professionals currently practicing environmental/occupational health who are seeking formal training, current degree candidates in the School, and non-degree candidates wishing to begin their formal training in environmental health.
Admissions Criteria The program is open to any student qualified to register as a Special Student Limited, Special Student Regular or JHU degree candidates outside of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. Students registered as a Special Student Limited; however, may pursue courses in only one certificate in the School due to enrollment restrictions. Admission to the Department as a Special Student Regular or degree candidate is required for individuals wishing to enroll in the coursework beyond that required by the Certificate Program. It is recommended that students planning to pursue this certificate inform the Department in writing as soon as possible, but no later than the first week of the term in which the final course is to be taken.
Course of Study The certificate program consists of successful completion of five courses.
All students are required to complete three of the following four courses: 180.601 Environmental Health* (5) OR 180.609 Principles of Environmental Health I (4) 182.625 Principles of Occupational & Environmental Hygiene* (4) 187.610 Public Health Toxicology (4) 188.680 Fundamentals of Occupational Health* (3)
In addition, students are required to complete two of the following courses: 180.601 Environmental Health* (5) (unless 180.609 is taken) 180.609 Principles of Environmental Health I (4) (unless 180.601 is taken) 180.611 180.611 Global Environment and Public Health (4) 180.629 Environmental and Occupational Health Law and Policy (4) 180.640 Molecular Epidemiology Biomarkers in Public Health (4) 180.670 Terrorism and Public Health (3) 182.615 Airborne Particles (3) 182.621 Introduction to Ergonomics (4) 182.622 Ventilation Controls (4) 182.623 Occupational Safety and Health Management (3) 182.625 Principles of Occupational & Environmental Hygiene* (4) 182.637 Noise and Other Physical Physical Agents in the Environment (4) 182.640 Food- and Water-borne Diseases (3) 183.631 Fundamentals of Human Physiology* (4) 183.641 Health Effects of Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution (3) 186.601 Introduction to Radiation Health Sciences (5) 187.610 Public Health Toxicology* (4) 188.680 Fundamentals of Occupational Health* (3) 188.681 Occupational Health (5) 188.694 Advanced Topics in Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing (3)
*These courses are offered through both in-class and internet venues. Please note that the School requires all students to establish an eLearning account and to complete the free Introduction to Online Learning course prior to the start of the term in which the first internet course is taken (see http://distance.jhsph.edu/iol/).
Requirements for Successful Completion 1) Courses must be taken for academic credit to count toward the certificate. 2) A letter grade of "C" or better in all courses. 3) Cumulative GPA of at least 2.25 in the certificate program. ...''
