Course Description:

'' The Certificate in Public Health Preparedness is designed to provide essential tools for public health practitioners to prepare for natural disasters, terrorism or other emerging threats. Specific objectives of the certificate are to: identify the major threats to public health and to identify public health issues in disasters; describe the integration of risk sciences, public health practice and public health surveillance as it relates to public health preparedness and terrorism response.


Intended Audience
This certificate is designed for degree-seeking BSPH students looking for specialized training in preparedness. The intended audience includes MHS and PhD students from across the School, MPH students not participating in the preparedness concentration, as well as a selected number of non-degree, special student regular students.


Admissions Criteria
Current degree-seeking students: Current students will apply for the certificate at the beginning of the term in which they are taking the last course required for the certificate. Certificate applications will be available from the HPM Academic Office. Students will complete the application and submit it along with a copy of their transcript to the HPM Academic Office. The HPM Academic Office will verify courses and GPA and will then report this information to the Office of Records and Registration for inclusion on the student’s permanent transcript.

Non-degree students: Non-degree students (special students) who want to take the certificate program will be required to submit an application (through the admissions office) for special student regular status, providing copies of their undergraduate transcript, statement of purpose, and one letter of recommendation. The application will be reviewed by a committee of faculty who will determine whether to admit or reject. Admitted special students will have three years to complete the certificate program, monitored by the HPM Academic Office. At the conclusion of the threee-year period (or at the completion of the certificate requirements) the Office of Records and Registration will be notified and the student will not be permitted any further registration in this status.

Requirements for Successful Completion
Requirements for successful completion: All students are required to complete the three core courses (10 credits) and an additional 10 credits from the list of approved courses for a total of 20 credits to complete the certificate. All course must be taken for academic credit/letter grade, and students must obtain an overall GPA of 3.0 in the 20 credits in order to receive the certificate.
