Training Course:

Globalisation, Communication and Culture

School/Trainer:

Brunel University
Uxbridge, Middlesex, United Kingdom

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' The Globalisation, Communication and Culture programme seeks to offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of culture and communications practices within a global framework. This innovative course draws from a range of disciplines such as sociology, cultural studies, politics, human geography and media studies to develop socio-cultural approaches to globalisation. The course explores the ways in which globalisation is embedded and practised through the intensified movements of people, ideas and objects that operate through different registers of communicative action. Taken in their widest sense these can range from word-of-mouth ’gossip’ to new communication technologies or ’experience’ as a communicative process. A central concern of the course examines communication as a global and mediated space. Thus, the course develops a distinctive understanding of globalisation that considers the interrelationship between wider economic and political changes and specific socio-cultural developments in terms of ’interconnections’, ’flows’ and ’mobilities’. Questions to be addressed include:

What are the implications of mobility for a global culture?
What effect does the increased movement of people have on urban culture?
How are contemporary societies transforming in light of a global culture?
How has globalisation changed notions of place and identity?
Do new forms of power emerge with the transition to a network society?
To what extent are new media technologies giving rise to new transnational or global social forms?
What methods might be used for studying the connections between technology, communication and globalisation?
