'' This emphasis on procurement has been recently identified as one of the key areas in the Irish Public Sector for development and training as recently as October 2005 by Mr. Brian Cowen TD, Minister for Finance. Currently over â‚?1 billion Euro for example is spent in the Health Sector, of which over â‚? billion is on procured goods and services.
As business organizations are going through rapid external environmental and internal organizational changes due to increasing globalization, e-business, and outsourcing increasing attention is being paid to the issue of how purchasing fits within business organizations and how it adds strategic value and contributes to corporate success. The aims of this programme are to meet these changing skills demands for professionals either engaged in procurement or working closely with the procurement function. There is a distinct need for senior managers to understand the role of supply chain management philosophy in the overall business improvement process.
This course aims to take one area of the supply chain, procurement and focus on the role of procurement in the supply chain and more importantly its strategic impact.
The specific objectives of the programme are:-
to introduce the student to leading-edge thinking in the area of procurement with a view to adapting it to make it appropriate to the business and organizational contexts in which they operate
to develop students that are more strategy oriented and less operationally oriented
to develop a knowledge base through both the taught and research elements of the program such that students can continue professional development post qualification

Programme Description:
DCU Business School is offering an innovative new Graduate Diploma/ Masters Programme in Strategic Procurement. The first of its kind in Ireland, the aim of the programme is to build the capacity for strategic thinking in procurement and meet the changing skills requirements for professionals either engaged in or working closely with the procurement function.
This programme has been endorsed by the National Public Procurement Policy Unit in the Department of Finance as being a suitable programme to improve the strategic procurement skills of individuals in the public sector.
The programme will be delivered by block release on 3 days per month i.e. Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Programme Structure:
Maximum class size will be 25. The target market will be both public and private sectors.

The programme is broken into six integrated units (Unit is being used instead of module as a module typically is being described as having 5 credits). These units reflect themes and as such are presented over the year. Each unit is worth 10 credits. 3 Units will be delivered each year. The total credits required for the Masters program is 75.
As a requirement of the masters program a research thesis will be required to be delivered by the end of the second year. It is proposed that this will be run over the course of the two years.
