School/Trainer:

University of Edinburgh
Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' In the first year, the MBA programme commences in October. In the second and third years, it starts in Mid-September. It is divided into two semesters. The course runs for thirty months and usually involves attending two evenings a week plus some Saturdays, thus enabling you to continue the development of your career, as well as your education.

Induction programme
Your intensive induction to the course takes place over two evenings in each of the first two weeks. As well as providing an overview of the programme, the induction will introduce the essential management concepts and techniques that will be taught and utilised over the next three years.

Career and personal development
Central to our philosophy of giving you excellent management abilities as well as increasing your academic knowledge, we deliver a full programme of career and personal development which comprises three essential elements: Diagnosis: A detailed perspective on your current skills using leading edge diagnostic tools and industry-recognised benchmarks. Delivery: A variety of units are run in parallel with academic modules, concentrating on skills such as study and learning, career management, influential communication, problem solving and decision making, leading and working in teams, and emotional intelligence. Development: Frequent feedback, one to one sessions, individual coaching, team review exercises and exit planning ensure you can both articulate and attain your chosen goals.

MBA Programme
There are a total of ten foundation courses explored in the Part-time programme. They form the backbone of the MBA course and create a platform on which the remainder of the course is built. Teaching follows a systematic approach through lectures, set reading, exercises and case studies. The ten foundation courses are as follows:

Business Economics
Corporate Social Responsibility
Finance
Financial Reporting
Marketing Fundamentals
Operations Management
Organisational Behaviour
Organisational Decision Making
Research Methodology in Business
Strategic Management
Half of the ten foundation courses are studied in the first year, three in the second year and two in the final year.

Integrative projects At key points during the three years you ll be expected to undertake integrative projects. These projects will challenge you to draw together learning from all your different courses and tackle a subject using a cross-disciplinary approach.

Specialist options You will choose three options in your second year and two in your final year from a wide range on offer. These options build on the foundation courses already introduced and allow you to tailor your MBA in whichever direction you d like to specialise or choose a broad base of options should you wish to take a more general approach. As these options are offered to all Edinburgh MBA students, you ll work with colleagues from many different backgrounds, cultures and organisations.

Assessment Each course component is assessed using a combination of formal examination, individual/ group assignment, project work, and class participation. The nature of the component will dictate which form( s) of assessment are used. Foundation and option courses are normally assessed at the end of each individual course.

Dissertation Towards the end of your second year, you will embark on your dissertation. The emphasis here is again on integration, bringing together the knowledge you have gathered through the core and specialist option courses and applying it to a business environment. Completion of a dissertation provides you with a genuine opportunity to produce a unique piece of work and truly distinguish yourself.
Sponsoring organisations gain a valuable opportunity to investigate an issue or solve a particular problem. A selected member of the Management School Faculty provides guidance throughout your dissertation.
