Course Description:
'' This module aims to provide students with a sound introduction to, understanding of and working knowledge of the key concepts, principles and techniques of basic financial accounting and management accounting. From a practical perspective and starting from a position of no prior assumed knowledge, the module will equip students to plan, control, report upon, and analyse businesses from the accounting perspective.
Syllabus Plan Day 1
Introduction to accounting and international regulatory framework of financial reporting. Accounting basics: account classification, concepts, conventions and financial statements. Main financial statements: Income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.
Day 2
Analysis and interpretation of financial statements. Working capital management & sources of finance.
Day 3
Costing (classification, assignment and allocation). Managerial decision analysis (contribution analysis and relevant costing).
Day 4
Planning & control systems (budgetary control). Performance measurement & transfer pricing.
Assessment Problems and discussion topics to be prepared and resolved in groups (not for credit) [ILOs 1 15]. A 3,000-word written assignment [30%] (ILOs 1 13). A two-hour written examination [70%] (ILOs 1 13).
