'' The course aims to provide the non-specialist with a general understanding of some of the key theoretical and practical financial issues surrounding financial accounting today.

The key aims of the course are to provide you with:

an overview of the primary financial statements (balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement), and the inter-relationship between these statements
an appreciation of key accounting concepts, and a more detailed understanding of the primary financial statements and the terminology surrounding them
an awareness of a sample of key and topical accounting policies, and international accounting standards
an understanding of how these policies and standards impact financial statements
the tools needed to be able to make an assessment of a company using ratio analysis
an awareness of how techniques of "creative accounting" can mislead users of financial statements
Throughout the course we will draw heavily from "real world" examples and accounts wherever appropriate.
