'' Geographical information systems (GIS) is becoming increasingly important to decision makers across a wide range of organisations concerned with land, resource and environmental management. If you would like to gain the technical and analytical skills needed to exploit geographical information, this course is ideal. It examines both the theoretical and practical aspects of GIS and takes an applied approach by studying GIS alongside a range of allied subjects, such as natural resource management, remote sensing, conservation and sustainable environmental management. If you are unable to commit to the full masters programme, intermediate qualifications (PgCert/PgDip) are available.
What you will study You will develop a knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in core elements of GIS and its application to a range of allied disciplines. You will learn how to identify, locate and critically appraise, investigate and develop primary and secondary geographical information sources. You will also develop GIS skills in data handling, manipulation, analysis, interpretation and presentation at a high level, and foster professional competence and attitudes appropriate to the GIS industry. Your study of GIS is supported by two dedicated GIS labs at the University, as well as access to all major GIS software and up-to-date digital data from Ordnance Survey and other suppliers.
