Course Description:

'' This programme will focus on training students in the scientific and social scientific aspects of the rapidly-evolving field of environmental hazards (natural and man-made) and their management.

The student learning experience at Kingston combines traditional classroom and field-based teaching and learning techniques with modern ICT-based learning support, through the University Learning Management System. This course places a strong emphasis on research-led teaching, student-centred learning and team-based activities which develop the skills required by practitioners in the field of hazard & disaster management.

The course is intended for those who seek to obtain or advance a career in hazard or risk management, environmental monitoring, emergency planning and catastrophe-related mitigation.

What you will study
Students on this course will study the underpinning scientific principles and modern management strategies covering a wide range of natural and human-induced hazards, such as tectonic hazards, climatic hazards, biological hazards and terrorism. Students will engage explicitly with the recently published literature in these fields and will undertake active research in one or more of their chosen hazard areas.

Assessment
Assessment of student learning will comprise a combination of written examinations and coursework, the latter incorporating scenario-based hazard management exercises, ICT-based and paper-based practical exercises, role play exercises, oral presentations, field reports and essays
