'' This Masters programme provides you with exposure to advanced concepts in banking and finance. The forces that sway financial markets, the theories underlying retail banking and the principles of strategic management are just a few of the subjects we will help you to master through a degree which offers a good variety of optional modules. So, whilst you gain an overview of the sector, the MSc Banking and Finance will also allow you to shape your degree to follow your interests, from risk and insurance to derivatives - and provide you with a genuine insight in to the varied career opportunities available to you on graduation.



The modules


Quantitative Methods

Focusing on business mathematics, descriptive statistics, probability, hypothesis testing and techniques for statistical analysis, this module builds the quantitative skills which will be used in other modules.



Professional Skills

This module develops a range of skills to support academic studies and enhance employment experience, including effective communication, team development and the use of communications and information technology.



Corporate Finance

Drawing on finance theory, this module considers financial markets, market efficiency, principles of strategic management, corporate capital structure and dividend policy, derivative markets, commodities and currencies.



International Banking and Finance

Focusing on the current challenges and issues facing the world’s international financial institutions and markets, this optional module considers problems, development, reform and policy.



Governance and Regulation

This module covers the theoretical, legal and practical implications of corporate governance and regulation, with specific attention being paid to how these topics apply in the financial services sector.



Risk and Insurance

This module provides a critical understanding of the main principles of life and non-life insurance. It covers the areas of life insurance and financial planning, underwriting and selection, mortality trends, life insurance mathematics.



Retail Banking

This module provides students with a critical understanding of the economic theories underlying retail banking operations and of the regulation and practices of retail banking. Areas covered include the financial system and the role of retail banks; financial intermediation; risk management in retail banking; the regulation of retail banking and the Banking Code; legal aspects of retail banking; aspects of retail banking strategy; customer relationship management in retail banking.



Research Methods in Finance

This module examines the research process, including the design and implementation of methodologically sound projects and the evaluation of research.



International Business Finance

This optional module examines corporate finance in the context of international financial markets and foreign investment opportunities.



International Investment

This optional module considers the pricing of assets and portfolio construction. It evaluates different types of investment and the effect of the international business environment on evaluation and hedging of portfolio risk.



Financial Derivatives

This optional module explores the underlying principles which govern the behaviour of futures options and swaps. It moves on to examine the interpretation of results of pricing models for various financial derivatives, and the application of financial derivatives to risk management.



Professional and Research Skills

This module provides students with models and behaviours which will help them understand and display skills needed in a professional organisational context. Topics covered include the marketing concept, human mental capacity, organisational processes, group dynamics, individual issues, human resource issues, management of change.



Consumer and Corporate Credit

This Stream 2 module examines the nature of credit markets for consumer and commercial lending. It focuses on the decision processes and credit management practices from the perspective of the lender, with emphasis on modern risk modelling and management techniques.



Securities Markets Micro-structure

This Stream 2 module focuses on the structure and operational efficiency of security markets through the analysis of market microstructure. It covers market design and trading mechanisms, research methods, market frictions and liquidity, trading strategies and information diffusion.



Applied Financial Modelling

This module aims to provide an introduction to the mathematics of financial derivatives. The module will cover the differential equations, stochastic models and quantitative methods needed to understand the Black-Scholes formulae.



Information & Organisation Design

Focusing on the issues of coordinating economic activities, this module includes the role of contracts, information and incentives in organisational settings, and agency theory.
