The modules
Diversity Management

This module examines the management of diversity in an organisational context, drawing on research evidence from a number of European countries. The first half of the module focuses on the context for the development of organisational diversity strategies in public and private sectors. The second part of the module focuses on different areas of HRM diversity practice examined through a critical lens, for example recruitment, promotion, training, development and mentoring, pay, flexible working and work-life balance.

Gender and Equality at Work in Comparative Perspective

This module aims to give students a theoretical and conceptual vocabulary through which to develop an understanding of patterns of (in)equality, diversity and gender relations in the UK, Europe and in the US. It aims to bring to light cross national variation in key themes, such as occupational segregation, working-time patterns, pay and organisational cultures, to provide students with both a theoretical and empirical understanding of gender and equality at work internationally.

Research Methodology 1

This module considers ways in which social science research relates to scientific methods, and examines the research process, including the design and implementation of methodologically sound projects and the evaluation of research.

Human Resource Management

This module examines the main principles and practices of HRM, drawing from developments in the global economy. It considers the changing nature of work, the core components of HRM and comparative regulatory systems.

Industrial Relations

Drawing on the nature of, and developments in, industrial relations in Britain, Europe, North America and Asia, this optional module focuses on recent developments in management, trade union and state policies, and the changing nature of work in organisations. It considers the pressures for change in industrial relations against the backdrop of shifts in the world economy since 1945.

Training and Development

Demonstrating the importance of training in enhancing competitive performance and supporting broader human resource management initiatives, this optional module reviews national training systems and policies in Europe, the USA and the Far East, and explores issues relating to training and development initiatives within organisations.

HRM in the Asia Pacific

This optional module considers the systems of employee relations in eastern Asia focusing in particular on industrial relations and Human Resource Management in the key economies including Japan, India, China, Singapore and Taiwan. It explores the ways in which contemporary economic developments have impacted on traditional systems of industrial relations and employment regulation.
