'' Loughborough University’s Business School’s Healthcare Fire Safety Management Programme is a unique and exciting new initiative.

Developed in close collaboration with members of the Association of Healthcare Fire Safety Officers, the programme is designed to address the needs of the specialist healthcare fire safety professional. The rapid development of this profession in the quickly changing world of healthcare delivery, requires dedicated programmes to be available that instil the knowledge and skills that this exacting role demands.

Loughborough University has met this need by building on its established suite of healthcare management programmes.

Whilst the programme does focus principally on healthcare fire safety in the UK National Health Service it also addresses issues and concerns specific to the Independent Health and Social Care Sector.

Who is this programme designed for?

NHS Fire Safety Managers.
Fire Safety Consultants working in the Independent Health and Social Care Sector.
Managers within Healthcare Organisations with responsibility for fire safety or emergency planning.
Owners and Managers of Care Homes.
Fire Prevention Officers working in Fire and Rescue Services.
What qualification is available and how long does it take?
The Loughborough Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Fire Safety Management which requires students to undertake three modules and takes twelve months of part-time study.

What will I learn?
There are three taught modules. Each module requires that students attend a five-day non-residential course at Loughborough University, in addition to home study. Teaching methods include case studies, role play, discussion, lectures and presentations.

Module 1 - The Fire Manager’s Role (topics include)

Methods of investigating fire.
Fire hazards and risk in healthcare establishments.
Technical fire control measures.
Fire safety legislation.
Module 2 - Assessment of Fire Risk (topics include)

Proactive risk assessment systems including HFMEA.
Reactive risk assessment systems including RCA, logic trees and SEA.
Management of fire risk registers.
CNST, S4BH etc.
Module 3 - Fire Safety Governance (topics include)

Fire safety policy creation and management.
Development of fire risk control strategies.
Emergency planning within fire risk control.
Performance indicators in fire safety management.
The role of the Fire Policy Group.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment is by means of coursework, in-class tests, group case studies and group presentations

Admission requirements
Ideally candidates should hold a relevant first degree or Corporate Membership of a British Chartered Profession or other qualifications approved by the University. In practice the University will adopt a flexible approach to admission requirements. Candidates without conventional qualifications may be invited for an interview.
