Training Course:MA Sonic ArtsSchool/Trainer:Middlesex University Business School London, United Kingdom
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' This is a research-based programme: you propose a project or series of investigations and agree a programme of study to support this. The programme is suited to sonic artists and theorists looking to use their work as the basis of an academic qualification. Projects can feature a wide range of practices in contemporary sonic arts so can include electroacoustic composition (either acousmatic or including live performance), installation art, acoustic ecology and radiophonic art. The MA Sonic Arts degree is aimed at practitioners with composition and performance as major elements of the programme, though we also encourage projects based entirely on theoretical and historical aspects. It is based at one of our University research centres - The Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts (LCEA)- Europes leading innovator in education concerning the understanding and application of computing to media and the arts. The MA Sonic Arts differs from most of the other courses offered by the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts (LCEA). Whilst the Centre is a leading provider of structured taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the MA Sonic Arts offers an alternative approach in which you propose a project or series of investigations and agree with staff a programme of study to support this work. The course is particularly suited to practising sonic artists who wish to use their own work as the basis of an academic qualification. Such work may be in the areas of composition, performance (including instrument/interface design), history and aesthetics, sound installations, radio or any other area which the Centre is able to support. In view of the constantly evolving definition of sonic art, the programme is intended to offer you the opportunity to challenge received approaches, to formulate your own personal views and to consolidate and/or modify them through practical and creative activity in a wide range of relevant areas. Support for your programme of study takes the form of scheduled tutorial guidance, seminars, specialist technical assistance (though students on this course are expected to have relevant prior technical skills), and opportunities to present work to other student groups. Unlike the majority of LCEA students, those on the MA Sonic Arts do not have equipment provided for them in the Centre, and therefore do not pay a studio fee. You are expected to have access to suitable facilities at home or at work. The programme is normally made up of three 60 credit modules, ELA4902, ELA4952 and ELA4996, and is available in both part time and full time modes. PGW398 Programme content The content and structure of the course is designed to allow flexibility and customisation. All sonic arts students are welcome to attend any LCEA lectures (within the practical constraints of timetabling). We will help you to identify which lectures will be of most benefit to your work. You can choose whether to develop a single project throughout your studies or a series of projects. You should consider these as investigations with defined research objectives, even though they may involve actual productions which are part of your employed work. The programme is based at Cat Hill Attendance patterns vary with mode of study, the nature of the proposal and whether assessed work is part of employment. All students must maintain regular contact with their supervisory tutor and attend periodic group seminar presentations. These seminars are an integral part of the course and develop awareness of research activities in which staff and students are involved. All students must maintain regular contact with their supervisory tutor and attend periodic group seminar presentations. These seminars are an integral part of the course and develop awareness of research activities in which staff and students are involved. Assessment is based on your agreed proposal. This will normally be approximately 70 per cent practical with a 30 per cent minimum written submission, normally an 8,000 to 10,000-word dissertation. Written work encourages you to demonstrate that you have reflected critically on your own practice. The aim is to place practice in a social and artistic context, thereby improving the projects undertaken. We consider this relationship between theory and practice fundamental to the degree programme. A higher proportion of written work is possible, including a wholly theoretical approach where appropriate. Assessment: Assessment is based on your agreed proposal.
