'' The laws governing international business, labour and trade are critical to global economies. They are also a primary focus of our law department’s research and teaching here at Middlesex. It comprises four taught modules: international trade law; competition law; international public law and international arbitration; and international labour law and the regulation of economic migration. The four taught modules are taken concurrently if you are studying full time. After completing the taught modules, you are invited to explore the boundaries of knowledge in your chosen subject area through the dissertation.

The award of LLM (without a specialist title) is available for those who would prefer more flexibility in their course of study. It comprises four taught 30-credit modules and the dissertation module. Students choose up to three of the modules offered on the LLM International Business Law and at least one module from the following:

Recruitment and Termination Law Discrimination Law Any non-law Business School ModuleSubject to staff agreement and pre-requisistes, you may take 30 credits elsewhere in the Business School, for example, from management, accounting or human resources. You then take the same dissertation module and receive the same training as students doing the LLM in International Business Law but you will, subject to staff availability for supervision, be able to pursue any suitable question that has arisen out of your taught modules.

Programme Content:
The LLM International Business Law offers a broad and deep analysis of international business law. The LLM International Business Law comprises four modules worth 30 credit points each, taught over the two teaching terms. This is then followed by your dissertation.

International Trade Law
At a time when developing countries such as India and China are taking centre stage in the provision of manufactured goods and services on the international scene, an understanding of international trade law has become increasingly important for those studying law, business, marketing, banking and finance. This module looks at both the regulation of international trade by international organisations such as the World Trade Organisation and the legal framework which affects the rights and obligations of the parties entering into business transactions at the international level.

Competition Law in a Global Context
In a global economy it is vital for businesses to understand the legal regimes which affect their operations, regardless of where they are based. Businesses outside the EU need to know how they are affected by EC competition law relating, for example, to mergers. The EC regime is increasingly significant as a model for developing countries intending to establish mechanisms to regulate competition and the module will place EC competition law in the context of international developments. The main focus in the first half of the module will be the framework of the EC rules, their economic underpinning, the influence of US anti-trust law and their enforcement and application. The second half will consider its detailed application to specific practices and economic sectors. Prior knowledge of EC law is not necessary for this module.

International Public Law and International Commercial Arbitration
The first part of the module will review the basic principles of public international law. The rest of the module provides a contemporary understanding of the legal framework within which international commercial disputes between private parties and between states and private parties are resolved. The module covers key areas of international commercial arbitration: the lex arbitri and the applicable law, arbitration clauses and submission agreements, arbitrability, the establishment of the arbitral tribunal and confidentiality, the jurisdiction of the arbitral tribunal, the role of national courts and interim measures, content and challenge of arbitral awards, and finally recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards.

International Labour Law and Movement of Workers
The first part of this module will examine the scope, function and effectiveness of international and European labour standards. In particular, it will focus on aspects of the law relating to the problems of enforcing international labour standards. The second part of the module will begin by considering problems connected with the regulation of international migration for work. International agreements on the treatment of migrant workers will then be studied followed by discussion of the movement of workers both into and within the European Union. Finally, consideration of labour market access and the treatment of migrant workers within the UK will provide a case study of one nation state¿s response to a globalised labour market.
