'' MA TESOL is designed for native and non-native speakers of English, who are graduates of English language or other language-related programmes, wishing to start or further a career as a teacher of English as a foreign or second language. It builds on upon previous language study to deepen and broaden the understanding of language as an object of study. Trends and debates within modern ELT pedagogy are introduced through the programme. X1Q1 Inbuilt flexibility allows students to pursue their professional interests through a choice of modules and module assignments that can be tailored to students own teaching context. The dissertation allows for classroom based research in the students home country. Language study and teaching pedagogy modules in semesters one and two provides you with a solid grounding for your career as an English language teacher.
Semester one modules emphasise attention to core aspects of TESOL methodology and classroom practice and introduce the structure and analysis of authentic language use. Semester two modules develop language analysis skills through the study of pedagogic or linguistic grammars. They allow you to pursue more specialist areas of TESOL through your choice of options. In this semester you also take a research methods module to help prepare you for the independent research of your dissertation.
Principles and Practices of Language Teaching introduces good classroom practice and whilst Syllabus Design and Methodology in ELT looks at broader issues of pedagogy in a wider context.
Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers introduces you to the investigation of naturally occurring language and focuses on what type of language is the object of study and goal for mastery in a foreign/second language classroom. This relates back to issues studied in the two semester one pedagogy modules.
Semester two allows you to develop your understanding of language description in terms of pedagogic or linguistic grammars. Language Analysis for ELT is the study of pedagogic grammar. Grammatical Description of English is a study and comparison of linguistic grammars and pedagogical grammar.
The compulsory Research Methods module in semester two prepares you for the extended research of your dissertation. A choice of options in semester two allows you to tailor the programme to your particular professional and research interests.
