'' The programme combines practice in translation with input on literary and linguistic theory and on the theory, history and culture of translation. A strong emphasis on research skills means that the programme forms an excellent basis for further study to PhD level or for future research in the workplace. There may be opportunities to undertake commissioned translation or editing tasks through TRANSCEN, Middlesex University Translation Institute’s translation and text editing service.

This module serves a dual purpose: It trains you in the research skills necessary for the MA Dissertation and for progression to the PhD; and it enables you to evaluate theoretical claims made in the literature on Translation Studies. The module begins by introducing graduate research skills, including advanced essay writing skills, bibliographical searches, and the exploitation of dictionaries and date bases. It moves on to focus on advanced research methodologies, for example investigating the processes involved in translation, analysing the translation product, exploring the reception of translations, the processes of editing translations, and preparing a research proposal.

Literary Texts and their Translation and Translating Other Genres

These modules encourage you to develop as a translator. You will gain access to aspects of linguistic, literary and cultural theory that are particularly relevant to translation and you will acquire relevant descriptive and analytical vocabulary and methodologies. For each module, you will produce two justified, edited and annotated translations of a text of your own choice.

History, Theory and Culture of Translation

This module charts the development of thinking about translation from its beginnings in practitioners reflection on their own translation practices, through more systematic theoretical pronouncements, to the fully fledged academic discipline of Translation Studies as we know it today. It introduces specific contemporary translation schools within Translation Studies, and aspects of literary, linguistic and cultural theory which are particularly pertinent to translation.

The dissertation enables you to produce an extended research project or annotated translation of your own.

Each module is structured into two 12-week halves of which 6-8 weeks are taught and 4-6 weeks are for individual research and the production of an essay. The second essay may follow on from the first. The dissertation may develop aspects first researched in the essays, though material may not be repeated as part of the assessment of the dissertation (rather, it will be placed for reference in appendices).
