'' The Business Schools MSc Banking and Finance programme builds on the Schools established strengths in economics and finance and has been created in response to the increased growth of the financial services sector. Worldwide growth in the sector has furthered the demand for students with specialist skills and competencies in banking and finance. Closely related to the Schools MSc Finance programme, the Banking and Finance degree features a greater number of compulsory modules in central, retail and investment banking. The programme is particularly aimed at those interested in pursuing a career in
investment banking central banking retail banking financial research financial trading The one year programme should be of interest to graduates with an accounting, economics or finance background interested in the above careers. In exceptional circumstances graduates from other disciplines will be considered. The programme is made up of a combination of core and optional modules and candidates may share modules with students on the Schools successful MSc International Economics and Finance degree and the Schools MSc Finance degree.
Programme Description This is a one year full-time modular programme and begins in mid September with an Induction Week, which all students must attend. The taught component runs over two semesters and consists of compulsory modules (80 credits) and optional modules (40 credits).
The compulsory modules equip students with the fundamental skills in banking and finance theory and practice and include, for example, the theory and practice of bank capital regulation. The programme will also provide candidates with the computer and research skills required by employers in this highly competitive sector.
The optional modules on this programme offer students the chance to tailor the structure of their MSc towards certain jobs within the sector. For example, the optional module in Credit Risk Modelling is of particular relevance to students interested in credit scoring jobs in the banking sector.
In addition to the taught component of the course, students are required to write a dissertation on a banking and finance topic in the second semester of the programme (60 credits).
Learning Methods Learning is a three way partnership between you, your fellow students on the programme and the School. Our MSc programmes employ an innovative blend of teaching methods, which enable you to get the best from all three partners. Seminars, group work, computer-based learning, skills exercises, and case studies are used extensively to create real life problem solving situations.
Entry Requirements A first degree at second class honours level or above from a UK University (or equivalent from a non-UK institution).
Applicants whose first language is not English will require a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. Pre-sessional courses and tests in English Language are provided by the University if required and successful completion of these may be a condition of entry.
