'' Society is now governed by a complex system of law and regulations: the Diploma will explore how these laws and regulations are made together with their place and role in society. An opportunity to evaluate their role and function is then provided by the study of the law of obligations, the law of property, and public law. The main aims of this diploma are:

To provide learners of all backgrounds with the opportunity to explore and develop their interest in, and to gain knowledge and understanding of, the law and legal system of England and Wales.

To provide learners, through the study of law, with the opportunity to explore and develop their cognitive skills, to become independent learners, and to develop other associated and transferable skills and attributes.

To provide learners who wish to continue their legal education at the vocational stage with the intellectual and practical skills necessary to do this effectively.

If you’re new to study or to the OU, we recommend that you start with a course at Level 1. We particularly recommend starting with our new course Rules, rights and justice: an introduction to law (W100). This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts and study of law and legal reasoning. The course has extra support to help you to get used to OU study methods as well as to prepare you for higher-level study. You may also want to consider taking one of our short courses, such as Start writing essays (A172), as an introduction to higher education.

You must include at least 40 points from OU courses that have not been counted in an OU diploma or other first degree you have been awarded.
