Course Description:
'' This is the final course in the Spanish diploma, following on from Viento en popa (L204/LZX204). L314 will continue to develop your knowledge and understanding of Spanish-speaking societies and cultures and extend the practical skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through a variety of authentic audio, video and printed materials from Spain and Latin America. You will also develop your critical and analytical skills and intercultural competence.
The course has seven themes that give a broad introduction to different aspects of Spanish-speaking countries. Each theme is studied over four weeks and has associated video and audio documentary-style material, together with audio activities (listening and speaking exercises).
The themes in detail are:
Raíces. Origen y evolución de los pueblos hispanos Multicultural origin and identity; the Arab legacy in Spain; music and dance
Con mis propias manos. Arte y artesanía en España y América Latina Arts and crafts; the social function of art; art as a means of protest
En perspectiva. Perfil de la sociedad hispana contemporánea Social change in contemporary Hispanic societies: national cinemas; immigration and exile; the evolution of religious sentiment and religious institutions
Lenguas en contacto. Ecos lingüísticos del mundo hispano Language and politics in Spain; languages in Spanish America; Spanish in the USA
Un viaje por la ciencia. Descubrir, inventar e investigar Sciences, ranging from those of pre-Colombian cultures to the development of navigational instruments in the 15th century; inventors and inventions; astronomy
Tipos de cambio. Empleo y globalización del mercado Globalisation and the challenges of working across cultures; aspects of international trade; women and work
Al aire libre. Conservación del patrimonio natural National parks and their conservation; tourism and the environment; sustainable development.
