Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' This is the first course in the University’s Diploma in French and follows on from L120/LZX120 Ouverture. It continues to develop practical language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The themes of the course, which range from art in the community to technological innovation, are presented through video, audio and printed material. Each of the eight themes incorporates fifteen minutes of video footage presenting a documentary, an extract on the theme from French television and a specially-written drama that combines the themes and the language learning. The topics have been selected to provide opportunities for comparison with your own experience.

The first part of the course, Espaces, presents views of personal life, taking the themes of:

Well-being (Bien dans sa peau)

Living in the city (Clefs en main)

Art in the community (Expression artistique)

Environmental issues (L’environnement en danger).

The second part, Perspectives, looks at wider themes, inviting you to form views and opinions about:

Local politics (Les affaires publiques)

National development projects in France (Grands projets)

Changing roles in employment (Nouveau départ)

The impact of science and technology (Science et technologie).

The third part of the course, Horizons, comprises a continuation of texts and activities incorporating suggested and model answers. It develops your writing skills in particular, but also addresses other skills concerned with comprehension, analysis and manipulation of texts for example, summarising, expressing opinion on written passages, style and register, appreciation and accuracy.

The course is lively and varied, with a wide range of mixed-media material that has been selected in order to build up your confidence in the different language skills. The structure of the materials allows you to evaluate your progress regularly and provides confidence-building strategies to improve your learning skills. The materials are interactive and encourage your participation.
