Course Description:
'' This is the final course in the French Diploma, following on from L211/LZX211 Nouvel Envol. L310 will continue to develop your knowledge and understanding of the society and culture of contemporary France and extend the practical skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through a variety of authentic audio, video and printed materials. You will also develop your critical and analytical skills in intercultural competence.
The course has seven themes that give a broad introduction to different aspects of contemporary France and French-speaking countries. Each theme is studied over four weeks and has associated video and audio documentary-style material, together with audio activities (listening and speaking exercises).
The themes in detail are:
History: The end of the French Empire; a profile of General de Gaulle; revolution and republicanism
France as a multicultural society: An interview with the writer Azouz Begag; a visit to the community radio station Radio Soleil; the experience of immigration
The media: How Le Monde and France Soir present their news; what makes a good story for radio news; ethical and political issues surrounding the media
The arts in France: The influence of the comic strip in France; the national FĂȘte de la musique; the role of the State in encouraging the arts
Science and technology in France: How the museum Cité des sciences et de lindustrie presents science to the public; a profile of two oceanography museums in Brittany; the French traditions of scientific endeavour
Politics and economics: France as a strategic power in the world; on a local level, how economic policy affects daily living; political institutions and the presidents role
The French-speaking world: Interviews with writers from Canada and the Caribbean; how language affects identity; the role of the French language outside France.
