Course Description:

'' This course offers a professional education in photography and journalism as well as publication design and production. It will appeal to anyone who is passionate about visual communication and wishes to develop an awareness of photography’s role in contemporary society. Practical work is balanced and informed throughout by appropriate mass media theory. The course aims to produce highly skilled, flexible and knowledgeable professionals who can hold their own in the fluid and competitive world of today’s visual media.

Introduction
Combining world-class facilities with teaching by a team of practising professionals from the industry, the MA is ideal for anyone who wishes to gain the technical skills, informed flexibility and critical knowledge to work in a rapidly changing industry whether in the field of photojournalism, book, web or magazine publishing, or in publication design. Students come from a wide range of backgrounds: photography, journalism, business, literature and even philosophy. By graduation, they will have gained considerably improved skills in photography, digital image manipulation and design while advancing their knowledge of the publication business and understanding of mass media theory.

Students will be encouraged to produce single images and photo stories, as well as publications and presentations, to meet the highest professional quality in content, design and production. The projects are based around genuine journalistic situations and are intended to be part of a professional portfolio that might lead to publication or commissions in the media or to enhance employment prospects. Recent projects include reportage stories on the Iraq war, the civil war in Nepal and the aftermath of the Balkans conflict, specialist publications on classic cars and ’green’ tourism and an alternative style and design magazine. Former students have gained work experience at Conde Nast Traveller magazine, the Sunday Times magazine, Associated Press, the Press Association, Wprost magazine in Warsaw and as photographer in residence at Harrow School.

The course is well placed to take advantage of the extremely vibrant publishing environment in London, internationally a major centre, where leading-edge technologies and innovative thinking interact with traditional businesses. It is a source of groundbreaking design and photography and home to many of the greatest agencies, publishers and creative teams in the world.
