Exploring the nature and the characteristics of the industry, this programme looks at how tourism can be marketed, managed and planned. Core modules cover tourism concepts, toursim marketing management and tourism policy and planning. An extensive range of options are available and the dissertation allows you to carry out a specialist study on a subject of your choice. Also available part-time Tourism continues to grow rapidly around the world and more and more places are becoming tourism destinations. This programme examines the nature and characteristics of the tourism industry, and explores how it can be marketed, managed and planned. It offers an extensive range of electives and options that allow you to pursue your particular interests, and it includes a dissertation on a subject of your choice. Why Study at Westminster? The Centre for Tourism recently obtained the maximum score of 24 in a Quality Assessment exercise undertaken by the UKs Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, making it one of only two UK university departments to achieve this level of success for tourism teaching. We are located on the Universitys newly-refurbished Marylebone Campus, in the heart of London, one of the worlds great tourism destinations. Londonę?tourism industry is growing rapidly, and we have extensive links with the industry in London and further afield. Senior figures from the industry make up our Tourism Advisory Group which advises on course development, and we invite a wide range of visiting lecturers to contribute to our programmes and to courses and conferences. These visitors enrich our programmes with their knowledge and experience, and offer valuable networking opportunities. We undertake research and consultancy for a wide range of organisations, including the British Government,the European Commission, VisitBritain, BAA, and many other private and public sector organisations. Findings from these projects enrich our teaching. We have strong international links, and partnerships for teaching and research in tourism include universities in France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the USA. We aim to have a cosmopolitan group of students on our courses, and are proud to have students from over 20 different countries around the world studying with us. The course is aimed at people who want to enter, or make further progress in the tourism and leisure industries, particularly in management or planning positions. It is appropriate for those aiming for careers in both the private and the public sectors, in Britain and internationally.
Course Content You must take a total of eight modules, of which three are options. The course consists of the following core modules: Tourism Concepts: particular characteristics of tourism, tourism demand, tourism products, tourism industry and tourism impacts Tourism Marketing Management: marketing and management for tourism enterprises Tourism Policy and Planning: analysis of destinations, and how they are managed and planned Tourism Project: (double module) a major research project/dissertation on a subject of your own choice Tourism Option Modules: Airline Planning, Airport Planning and Management, Business Tourism, Sustainable Tourism, Tourism and Cultural Industries and Urban Tourism. You can also choose a module in management from the Westminster Business School. Additionally, you can choose to study a language. You can study French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish, beginning at whatever level is appropriate to your current expertise. If English is not your mother tongue, you can take advanced courses in English. We also offer pre-sessional English programmes over the summer for those who need to improve their English before starting the course.
Teaching and Assessment We use a variety of teaching methods, including seminars, lectures and workshops. We make frequent use of case studies and projects based around current tourism issues and opportunities in real world destinations. We have high expectations, and believe that students learn best in smaller groups when they have a chance to get to know one another and academic staff. Assessment depends upon the modules you choose to take, but is a mixture of coursework, dissertation and examinations.
Entry Requirements You should have a good honours degree or equivalent. If English is not your first language, you must be able to show that you have an adequate standard of written English, with a minimum IELTS of 6.5. ...''
