Course Description:

'' Technical change in software development is rapid; it is accompanied and compounded by an increase in the complexity of the systems developed. This change is most noticeable in the use of web or internet-based interfaces to more traditional software systems. Businesses now regularly deploy systems that employ and integrate a wide range of computing technologies and paradigms.

There is an acknowledged national shortage of IT and computing skills in the workforce. In the specific area of software development, a number of factors contribute to this. The rate of technological change means that an individual�specific knowledge frequently becomes out of date. Secondly, many significant technological developments originate in industry rather than academia, and so are not yet firmly embedded in undergraduate curricula. Finally, many people enter the software industry without a specific educational background in computer science and acquire vital knowledge in the workplace in relatively ad hoc ways.

Our courses combine an emphasis on methodical approaches to the development of software applications and information systems with a determination to equip graduates with a portfolio of relevant skills and knowledge that are both research-oriented and practical. This course draws on this experience to cover in-depth important aspects of current practice in software development where there is currently a significant skills shortage, whilst instilling important research-based skills that will equip you for independent lifelong learning in a fast-changing, technically challenging environment.

Option module, a choice of either: Web Application Development followed by E-Application Development, or Mobile Application Development followed by Compact Framework Development.

The project is made up of two modules: a research proposal module and research project module.

Teaching and Assessment
We use a variety of methods to ensure that material is presented effectively and in a way that emphasises the practical nature of the subject. The wide range of skills and knowledge required for successful development of complex software systems is reflected by the wide range of strategies used to develop skills in these areas.

Associated Careers
Graduates will be employed in a variety of roles, from software project management to software development, in areas including the Internet and other networked environments such as mobile or wireless. Many of these jobs require a knowledge of particular application or development environments. What binds them together are the requirements of carrying out these tasks in a software engineering context.

Entry Requirements
You should normally hold a good Honours degree from a UK university in computer science or a related subject with a strong computer background, or an equivalent qualification.
